Alberto Ruiz

Alberto Ruiz is a very good soldier. During missions, he often risks his life. Skilful in combat, he never loses hope.

In a peaceful moment, he smiles with his friend Doc, talking about a Spanish book, he received from his mother, who was worried that her son has started to dream in English.

Ruiz has fallen in love with Susanna, a young nurse who takes care of the wounded. A little moment of serenity is broken when a soldier dies trying to pick a flower for her.

Susanna feels guilty, every person that she loves is killed. She wants to go away from Ruiz; she is afraid that he will be the next, but Alberto comforts her, he needs her.

Then the day arrives when, Ruiz goes back home. Everything is changed, nothing is as it was at the beginning. A co-worker’s phrase hurts him deeply, when he tells him that the Vietnam war was a waste of time, a cost for the tax payers. These hard words resound in his mind, and break his heart. He thinks again of his fellow soldiers who are now dead and the psychical and mental pain he had to face; Always following orders and for what…for nothing. There remains only an emptiness and a lot of sadness.

The night silence is broken by the phone call from his friend Percell. To hear again his voice, takes him back to Vietnam; there, together with his fellow soldiers, he really felt at home.
